After more than 15 years on Howard Street, I finally vacated and ventured south...south to Sumach Street!! February 28, 1999 was Transition Day!! In October 1997 I took the plunge and made a real estate purchase. I am now the proud owner of a unique loft space in the burgeoning Queen Street East district of downtown Toronto. Here, in the area known as Corktownbecause of its multitude of breweries and distilleriesthe former CBC television prop warehouse has undergone a dramatic transformation, from warehouse to live-work lofts. Located on the site of the old Dominion Brewerythe 19th century landmark which inspired its namethe Brewery Lofts are now fully occupied My new 1,200 square foot space is located on the 6th floor and sports a spectacular north-facing view of the central city. Click here to see a list of features. Constructed in 1956, the original building housed television props, some radio and television rehearsal halls, as well as the CBC's design centre and its centre for program archives. Upon completion of the new, state-of-the-art CBC Broadcast Centre on Front Street West in July 1992, the building's days were numbered. In 1993, the CBC building on Sumach was finally vacated...or was it? During the first few weeks of my occupancy, I discovered that my new home boasts legend of a ghost that resides in the building. According to research conducted by John Robert Columbo in his book, Haunted Toronto, maintenance people of the old building claimed that a resident spirit inhabited the 4th floor: "Apparently, at night, it would be seen to step onto the elevator whenever it stopped on that floor. The ghost has been described as that of a tall, saturnine figure dressed in black. It seemed that it moved in a jerky, disconcerting way, as if ill-co-ordinated or carrying a load. One wonders if the sepulchral figure accompanied the television props in their move to the new Broadcasting Centre." |
